Practical Application

Please complete the following practical questions. These questions will focus on who you are and how you might approach various scenarios.

We want to get to know who you are, how you would approach certain scenarios, and the questions do not necessarily have a right answer.

Answer with what comes to mind first and do not research, google or use AI in answering. We want to get to know who you are.

Scenario 1:

Samantha, a 41-year-old mother, is assigned to you, presenting for relationship counselling.  In her first session she tells you more about her family.  She is married to a 55-year-old professional businessman (Vusi) who works in Johannesburg most of the time and flies home to her and their two sons every three or so weeks.  She mentions that she is concerned about their relationship as Vusi seems very distant since he took the new job 6 months back.  According to her he seems short tempered, “but he has always had a short fuse” and the children seems very anxious around him.  He does not often make contact with them when he is in Johannesburg.  Samantha is a stay-at-home mother.  She tells you that she used to be in marketing but had to stop working once she and Vusi got married.  She mentions that she sometimes feels very lonely even though she has her two teenage sons with her.  Samantha speaks with a soft tone and is well spoken. You notice that the clothes she is wearing seems quite wrinkled and that her hair seems dishevelled, and she has dark circles under her eyes.  She wears a jacket even though it is the middle of summer.  She looks down most of the time when speaking to you and seems to get lost in thought sometimes.  You notice that she appears jumpy to sounds outside the counselling room.  Toward the end of your session Samantha tells you that Vusi will be coming home this weekend and she is not looking forward to him being at home.

After the session, reception informs you that she will need to speak to you about payment when she comes in for her follow-up appointment as she did not have the minimum fee of R50 rand for the session.

Scenario 2:

A 20-year-old student has been seeing you for three sessions.  As she gets up to leave at the end of the third session she says the following to you:  “Thank you so much for making time for me, it really felt like at least someone listened to me.  I guess this is our final goodbye also…  I am just so, so tired of it all…  I really don’t see the purpose in life anymore…“
